We envision a day when all women have access to Mother-Friendly Care

It takes a great amount of commitment and courage to provide Mother-Friendly Care within the context of our current health system. Every day, nurses throughout the country play an integral part in providing birthing women with quality, evidence-based care; care that is respectful of the mother-baby dyad, results in excellent health outcomes, and achieves the highest level of patient satisfaction. CIMS developed Mother-Friendly Nurse Recognition"--a personal and public recognition of individuals providing exemplary care-- to send the important message that all birthing women deserve the excellent service of Mother-Friendly nursing care.

Honor Birth!

Because pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period are milestone events in the continuum of life, we invite you to join CIMS in our campaign to Honor Birth by recognizing that special person who inspires your passion for Mother-Friendly Care.

"One Voice" Appeal to ACOG Gains Widespread Support

On Nov. 9, 2010, CIMS sent a powerful "One Voice" message to Dr. Richard Waldman, president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), in which CIMS is joined by 191 co-signing organizations and 958 individuals urging ACOG to revise its current recommendation (Practice Bulletin #115) that VBACs (vaginal birth after cesarean) should take place in hospitals where emergency cesareans are "immediately available." This request follows the March 2010 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Statement on VBAC, which found that VBAC is a reasonable choice for the majority of affected women. As of Jan. 26, CIMS had received no response from ACOG. CIMS will continue to press for ACOG's accountability to women, infants and their families in the coming year, and we look forward to your support.

The Birth Survey

The Birth Survey is an on-going online consumer survey that asks women to provide feedback about their birth experiences. Womens responses about specific providers and facilities will be available online to other women in their communities to help them decide where and with whom to birth. As they become available, the official facility-level intervention rates gathered from the state departments of health will be paired with the womens survey responses to help families make their birthing decisions.
